Syed Munawar Hasan was born in Delhi prior to the independence of Pakistan. Following the partition in 1947, his family migrated to Pakistan and settled in Karachi. He earned a Master’s degree in Sociology in 1963 and another Master’s degree in Islamic Studies in 1966 from the University of Karachi.
In his early years, Syed Munawar Hasan joined the National Students Federation (NSF), a student organization with a communist ideological orientation, and was elected its president in 1959. A turning point in his life came when he came into close contact with the activists of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) Pakistan and studied the writings of Mawlana Syed Abul Ala Maududi, which led to a significant ideological transformation.
He joined Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba in 1960 and quickly rose through its ranks. He was elected President of the University of Karachi Unit, the Karachi City Unit, and became a member of its Central Executive Council. In 1964, he was elected as central President of IJT, a position he held for three consecutive terms. During his presidency, IJT launched several campaigns addressing educational issues, reforms in the education system, and women’s education.
In 1963, he joined the Islamic Research Academy Karachi (IRAK) as a Research Assistant and was later appointed Secretary General in 1969. Under his leadership, the Academy published approximately 70 scholarly works. He also served as Managing Editor of the monthly journals The Criterion and The Universal Message, published from Karachi.
Syed Munawar Hasan became a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan in 1967. He served the Karachi chapter in various capacities, including Assistant Secretary, Secretary, Deputy Ameer, and Ameer of the city. He was also elected to the Central Shura and the Executive Council of the Jamaat. He served as Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan during 1992–93 and was appointed Secretary General in 1993. Later he was elected as the Ameer (President) of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan.
He represented Jamaat-e-Islami on several political platforms, including the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA). In the 1977 National Assembly elections, he contested a seat and secured the highest number of votes in the country.
Syed Munawar Hasan participated in numerous international conferences and seminars and visited the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and several countries in Southeast Asia. He also headed various planning and research bodies within Jamaat-e-Islami and is fluent in English.
Jamiat is the oldest and largest student organization in Pakistan.
